Year End in Review

Happy New Year!!!!

Normally, I'd post a quick, I am so excited for the new year, and how much inspiration its going to bring! But I think what I really want to do, is show you our 2009 is pictures, since pictures speak 1,000 words, it might be funner!

So here goes...

So a brief explaination:

Top Row: A slight change in our marketing and Eventology - totally loved meeting people that I have talked with for years and made some friends for life!

Second Row: Make new friends and keep the old ones, some are silver and the others gold! The first is of, myself, Stewart Powers, Amanda, and Amanda - we had a great time at TJ's Studio Networking Event, And then the fun we've had the office, PJ Party and Halloween!

Third Row: My Best Friends Wedding, and at the same time, same picture, what you don't see is that I got to work with and made friends for life with Wes and Rae Leytham (Love Love Love - but don't tell them, I hear Wes gets a big head) and our Bridal Shows, along with Let's Eat Cake! You all know how much that meant to me!

Fourth Row: Photobooth fun with Matt Radlinski from Verve Studios, formally known as Prince K-Gallery, me being a dork, shoveling an entire cupcake in my face (another thing marked off my life list), My sister's cake from Let's Eat Cake!, and Keri Vincent, meeting her (another thing marked off my life list).

Fifth Row: Speaking at The School of Rad and the funness that ensued, and more photobooth fun with Angela from Adore Events.

And so much more! 2009 was amazing! But honestly, like alot of you, I am glad to see it come to an end!

Welcome 2010! Let's ROCK YOU!

Happy New Year!

So it's time for New Year's Resolutions. This year, I've pledged to help my body be at its best, inside and out. That means 6 glasses of water a day, less sodium, more vegetables and no more preservatives. I'll get right on that after this bag of Nacho Bugles and a Hershey's Cookies N Cream bar. But really- I am determined from here on out, I won't purchase things impulsively. I hope that everything I buy I will have researched in advanced or at least heard about by word of mouth. The one thing I am a little worried that I'll end up buying only mainstream over hyped makeup. So, I'll continue to make my own makeup (I'll keep you updated!) and try to refine my formulas.

So here's to quality beauty, great health and the start of a fantastic decade. <3

Happy New Year!

Goodbye 2009, Hello 2010!!

2009 has been an insanely busy year for me, both personally and with regards to YouTube and this blog. I honestly couldn't have done it without any of you!

I began on YouTube in 2008, after being persistently poked by one of my friends. She sent me a link to one of Lauren Luke's videos wanting to know why I wasn't doing it as well. I gave it a go and in early 2008 I put up my first video. I never, ever expected the response I got. What began as something I didn't think would last 5 minutes has now gone on for nearly 2 years!

After my first few videos, I had repeated requests to start a blog. I'd tried in the past and it had just fallen to one side after a couple of months. I honestly wish I had continued the first Confessions of a Make Up Addict I began around 5 years ago. I deleted that blog several years ago and then forgot about the account I had here at Blogspot.

I resisted the idea as I thought a new blog would just go the same way. But by now I had literally had hundreds of requests to begin a blog. So, early in 2009 I dusted off the account (I even had to do the Google account transfer, it was that long ago since I logged on), started a new blog and put my first post up.

People started reading, then more, then I got more followers, more messages, emails and more readers. I hadn't expected people to be interested in yet another beauty blog. And here I am, nearly a year later, still going strong. It's thanks to all of you. For your messages, your support, and just being interested in what a girl in Lincolnshire has to say about beauty.

I met up with my first fellow YouTuber in 2009, arranging a trip to Meadowhall in February to meet Sophie for a day of shopping. Neither of us were sure we were going to make it as we were under pretty much blizzard conditions that day. We both made it to Meadowhall in one piece and had a fantastic day shopping and chatting about make up and YouTube. We had to abandon Meadowhall early though due to the weather. I was nervous about meeting her but I didn't need to worry at all! Meeting Sophie was just like catching up with an old friend, she's just lovely.

I visited London more times in 2009 than I had for the last 5 years. The Body Shop kicked it all off, recognizing that bloggers were worth paying attention to. They arranged an event that knocked every one's socks off and I met up with people I had only seen online before. Being treated like a VIP was certainly an experience! The Body Shop absolutely spoiled us! But I wasn't too sure the next day when I had bruises on my shoulder from carrying the goodie bag. The whole group of us went shopping after the event and had a fantastic time. Again, meeting Jasmine was like catching up with an old friend. I also had a lovely chat with Jen, Natalya and Rebecca, which you can read (along with links to all their fantastic blogs) here.

I went down again for the Barry M event which was just crazy! I met so many other bloggers and YouTubers and got a bit start struck when Sam from Pixiwoo *knew who I was!!*. It was so very busy at that event that I didn't get chance to speak to who I wanted to. I managed only a very quick "hi & bye" with Richie. Fortunately this time Jasmine insisted I stayed overnight at hers rather than forking out for a hotel. We had planned on doing a joint vlog, but only got round to it in November! And it was lovely to catch up with Sophie again.

A few more events were held over the summer, all of which I had to miss due to a combination of lack of funds and working hard. I got invites to a few events only 2 weeks before they were due so there was no way I could get down to London for them.

The next one I managed to get to was the Maybelline one. It was fun to catch up again with Jasmine and Jen, and meet Yinka but I left that event feeling somewhat disillusioned with the blogging world.

I had to do some very hard thinking about what it is I wanted from YouTube and blogging. My thoughts and aims for both had changed drastically in the previous few months. There were girls whose blogs I had read and liked who were turning out to be extremely backstabbing and bitchy. The blogging world was becoming something I was not wanting to be involved with. You can see over the summer how low my posting level was. At that point, I was ready to throw the whole thing in.

Like I said, some hard thinking later and I came up with a solution. I changed the format of my YouTube channel. Tutorials are nearly phased out. I won't be getting rid of them completely but they're no longer my focus. I'm burnt out on tutorials. After over 250 videos, I'm not enjoying them at the moment. I removed all these negative bloggers from my following list and favourites folders. If I can't see them posting, then they can't bother me. I also removed the option for anonymous commenting and all comments are moderated. It solved a huge part of my problems.

I got down to Oxford again for what I think was my favourite event of the year: the ELF event. I felt re-inspired after talking to everyone at the event and I knew where it was I wanted to head with my YouTube and blog. I do have to thank Jasmine hugely, she's patiently listened to me ranting and rambling several times.

2009 has certainly been eventful! It has been fantastic to get to know so many other lovely bloggers. I've been recognized in London a couple of times, which is quite frankly the most bizarre feeling in the world. Also, getting told people have seen me shopping, or at events but were too scared to come and say "hi" is also very strange. I promise I'm friendly! Just tell me why a random person is saying "hello". I promise, I'll be just as nervous as you are!

I've tried so many new things over the last year. I will continue to accept products from PR people and, as always, I promise to be nothing but 100% honest. I know that some of you go and buy these products after I've reviewed them or talked about them. There's no way I can lie about something! I'm not getting paid for any of these videos or blog posts by any of the companies. I've had opportunities to try brands and products that otherwise I would either have no access or money for, so I'm grateful that I get to play with so many new products!

I was absolutely thrilled to be asked by ELF to be one of the people doing videos for their channel on YouTube. I've been able to try so many amazing new products that I don't think I could ever be without. Each product is getting absolutely thoroughly tested and all will eventually be reviewed somewhere between my YouTube channel and blog.

2010 is again going to be a busy year, both personally and online. I've got a list a mile long of what I want to touch on! I'm going to be dealing a lot with minerals in 2010. I'm disappointed with myself over the fact that they rarely get mentioned in my blog and nowhere near as much as they used to on my YouTube channel. I've dusted off my Etsy account and started to compile a list of companies to order from.

I don't know if I'm going to be attending any events next year. It all depends on any invitations I get and who they're from! I do need to save up for a holiday in the summer so not going to London will save me a fortune!

I just want to take the opportunity to say a huge thank you to everyone who has ever read any of my blog posts or watched any of my YouTube videos. All the amazing opportunities and experiences I've had in 2009 are entirely due to the fact there are some of you who sit and watch or read what I have to say.

I hope you all have a happy 2010! And I hope you keep being interested in what I've got to say about all this beauty stuff!

MAC Dupes: Can You ID These MAC Colors Or Tell the Difference?

I don't write much about MAC because I find that since there are so many MAC experts out there, I don't feel like I would be contributing much by writing about the line. But I actually do like MAC products quite a bit. To me, they are definitely the most fashion-forward with trends and I love that they have such a wide range of colors, textures and finishes for all their products. Because there are so many colors, I think that just about anyone can find something they like.

One of the things I'm not crazy about though is their frequent discontinuation of colors to make room for new ones, but if your favorite product has been discontinued, there are chances it may be re-promoted with a new collection or that a very similar color will be released under a different product name.

All the products above are different colors, and while they aren't 100% the same, they are so close that once you apply them on the skin, you can barely tell the difference. Can you ID these or tell the difference?
  1. Pink Swoon Sheertone Blush
  2. Pink Glow Matte Blush (discontinued around 2007)
  3. Dark Edge Satin Eyeshadow (LE with N Collection, January 2008)
  4. Rummy Satin Eyeshadow (LE with D'Bohemia, May 2005)
  5. Bendel Girl Lipglass (Henri Bendel exclusive in September 2007)
  6. Light That Fire Lipglass (LE with Warm & Cozy 2009 Collection)
  7. Sugarshot Lustre Eyeshadow (LE with Sugarsweet, March 2009)
  8. Light Ray Lustre Eyeshadow (LE with Turquatic, July 2006)
  9. Cherry Blossom Lipglass (LE with Cult of Cherry, August 2008)
  10. Cultureclash Lipglass (LE with Electroflash, July 2008, will be re-promoted in Feb 2010)
  11. Trifle Lipglass (LE with Antiquitease, October 2007)
  12. Tongue-in-chic Lacquer (discontinued, unsure of date)
  13. Flash of Flesh Lipglass (LE with D'Bohemia, May 2005)
  14. Bare Necessity Dazzleglass
  15. Camel Eyeshadow (discontinued in 2000?)
  16. Modelette Eyeshadow (released with MAC Warm & Cozy 2009)

My New Years Resolution is to use up more and buy less (we'll see how well that actually goes). All of these from my stash are still good, I normally don't throw out things according to the standard expiration dates.

That being said, it still doesn't stop me from wanting MAC to repromote Maroon pigment, Brass Pigment, Coco Pigment, Pleasureflush MSF, Shrimplette Lipstick, Sharp Beige Lipstick, Fringe Eyeshadow, Heavenly Bliss Eyeshadow, Camel Eyeshadow, those cute Diana Ross pink makeup brushes and a bunch of their original blushes that they discontinued. The closest thing I've found to MAC Camel is the new Modelette Eyeshadow, but it's still a tad bit different. Close enough for me to be happy right now though.

I wish MAC would do an "Originals" collection every year and repromote discontinued products from the past as a collection.

Have you found any MAC dupes?

Last 2009 FOTD's...

I have been a busy bee and have not always taken the time to photograph my looks these past days.
However, I have two looks I managed to photograph and I can share.

This one was done with a lot of stuff (all Mac): Artifact paintpot, Sketch, Expensive Pink, Seedy Pearl, Carbon and Fig 1 eyeshadows. And, of course, a lot of blending.

And this is my New Year's eve look, featuring Mac Solar Bits in Bronzescape, and Mac Gilt by Association.

Happy New Year, everyone! I wish you health, laughter, love and beauty in all things!

Empties At The End Of The Year

Waaaaay back in April, I made a post where I mentioned that I would be keeping a record of everything that I use up for the rest of the year. As it's now early evening on New Year's Eve, I don't think I'm going to get anything else finished before tomorrow. I've included items like shower gel, shampoo and conditioner as I tend to have several of those open at once. I never have the patience to actually finish those!

Here's the list:
  • Herbal Essences Greasy roots/Dry ends Shampoo 400ml
  • Herbal Essences Greasy roots/Dry ends Conditioner 400ml
  • Nivea Hand Nourishing Cream 100ml
  • Tesco B Natural Organic Day Cream 50ml
  • Lush Whipstick Lip Balm 10g
  • Body Shop Moringa Shower Gel 60ml
  • About Face Pigment "That's So Camp" 1/8tsp
  • Anatomicals Help The Paw Hand Cream 100ml
  • YSL Instant Eye Make Up Remover 30ml
  • Body Shop Olive Glossing Shampoo 250ml
  • Body Shop Olive Glossing Conditioner 250ml
  • Collection 2000 Nail Polish Remover 150ml
  • Fyrinnae Perfume Oil "Cernunnos" 1ml
  • Garnier Fructis Strength & Shine Shampoo 250ml
  • Garnier Fructis Strength & Shine Condition 250ml
  • Shu Uemura Skin Purifier Cleansing Oil 8ml
  • Bee Luscious Shaving Cream For Her 120ml
  • L'Oreal Panoramic Curl Mascara "Black" 6ml
  • Body Shop Vitamin E Face Mist 100ml
  • Body Shop Wild Cherry Shower Gel 250ml

That's quite the list but I wish I'd managed to finish more than 2 make up items. I'll be keeping a list for 2010 as well, but this one will be from tomorrow!

Did you manage to finish any beauty products recently?

Fuzzy Mohair Sweaters - 1963

Mohair is the long silky hair of the Angora goat. It is a strong and durable fiber that takes brilliant color dyes well. And it makes wonderfully warm and fuzzy sweaters, as seen in these examples from 1963.

Snow white pullover with V-neckline and cable stitching at the center front. Hand knit in Italy by Blairmoor Knitwear. Sold in 1963 for $18 (about $125 in today's dollar).

A turquoise cardigan banded in brown and honey beige, hand knit in Italy by Famelia. Sold in 1963 for $18 (about $125 in today's dollar).

Beige vest edged in white by Darlene Knitwear. Worn with a white blouse and white pants. Sold in 1963 for $11 (about $77 in today's dollar).

3 piece pink suit consisting of a sleeveless shell, a cardigan, and a pencil skirt, all by Jane Irwill. Sold in 1963 for $36 (about $251 in today's dollar).

And my favorite, a brown bateau necked sweater with black and white animal spots. The 3/4 sleeves are bell shaped. Hand knit in Italy by Famelia. Sold in 1963 for $25 (about $174 in today's dollar).

Happy New Year!

From all of us at MasterPiece Weddings, we wish you a super duper New Years!

Go out and have fun - make some do'able resolutions, and make the most of your year!

And remember: The rock that is an obstacle in the path of one person becomes a stepping stone in the path of another.

Best of 2009: eye products

If 2008 was the year I learned how to apply eyeshadows properly, 2009 was definitely the year where I improved my techniques and build up my eyeshadow collections!

Although I do not own the UD Get Baked palette, I have all the colors in other palette and have been using the Bake series a lot. Anything gold or bronze is generally appealing to me.

That is probably why Mac Tempting, which is permanent but was part of the Style Warriors collection, is my favourite eyeshadow ever. I am totally obsessed about it and find myself buying every variation of that color in every possible brand. How many bronze eyeshadows does a girl need?

Although much more golden, Barry M Dazzle Dust #44 kind of plays in the same field. I really enjoy wearing Dazzle Dusts. They're fantastic on they're own but foiled they're absolutely gorgeous - especially this one. This year is also the year where I found the perfect brow product for me: Illamasqua brow cake. This stays on all day, works great, and the pan will probably last until my brows turn grey and I need another color!

And finally, 2009 is the year where I decided to give high end mascaras another try, after years of using drugstore products and swearing they're just as good. YSL Faux-Cils proved me wrong and I just can't be without it anymore.

Fancy sharing your own favourite eye products?

NARS Concealer

Today, I am a happy person. I am also very pleased with Sephora- I'd go as far as to say that if I could legally marry a store, I would leave my fiance in an instant. Do you know why in particular, I am so thrilled with Sephora? A couple of days ago, I found that NARS duo concealer IN MY SHADE was $10 online. Yes, that's right ladies, ten dollars. Normally it's $30, and each shade of concealer separately is $22. I've been waiting and waiting forever for it to get here (ok, not really- packages from Sephora always get here in 3 days or less, but I am an impatient person). Turns out the UPS man left it this morning on my side door, not my front door.  Anyways, I opened it up and played with it right away.  It's absolutely fantastic. The moment it touched my skin, I was beyond amazed. I love the feel of it- it's so much lighter and smoother than MAC's. It feels like... primer. That same silkiness makes me giddy. By comparison, other concealers seem too pink for my skin and also very heavy and tacky in texture. Not NARS! The coverage is pretty amazing- it's sheer yet covering. I like the lighter shader for under my eyes, and in the winter but Ginger is fantastic for some areas near my temples that are slightly darker- every face has its dark and light areas, skin without a range seems unnatural! It's fantastic for light olive Asian skin tones. A few things I noticed- you HAVE to wear primer with this stuff or else it disappears within a few hours. Also, this is one of the few concealers I'd recommend applying with CLEAN fingers- Gasp, I said the 'F' word!- but really, you need the warmth of your skin to make the formula blend correctly. I am thinking of running to a Sephora store tomorrow to see if they have any more left, I want to stock up! This is my new obsession, it's the Holy Grail of blemish coverage.

Glitter in my Eyes

So, I have this dress that I've purchased for one of my Christmas parties and I am having shoe issues. I've searched high and low, scouring the shelves of every shop, department store and online boutique and I can't find anything. How is this possible? I know I'm beyond fussy but it's getting ridiculous! Then, like a flash of shiny light, I spotted these beauties. Of course they're on my favourite online store Net-a-Porter (UK based) and of course they're Christian Louboutin and of course they're simply gorgeous. Of course they have a rather hefty price tag, but after all it's Christmas, and I'm hoping Santa makes a quick delivery of these to David Jones. In one of my moments I could easily be pursuaded!

DiorShow Mascara (Iconic, Blackout & Diorshow)

There is a great mascara combo pack at Sephora, and yours truly HAD to have it. It contained a full sized Dior Iconic, a mini DiorShow and a mini DiorShow Blackout. Considering Iconic is $25 bucks on its own and the pack was $29, it was a great deal because it was like the two minis were a couple dollars each. This was my first run in with DiorShow (I guess I balked a bit at the price tag). Well, to be honest, each of the mascaras alone left me somewhat unimpressed. I wasn't disappointed, not quite, but I certainly wasn't wowed. Then I tried layering 2 of them- Iconic for length and DiorShow for volume and it was STUNNING! The same thing happened when I used Iconic and Blackout together. My lashes was this masterpiece, long thick black strands that looked almost fake. Grr, that's somewhat annoying that I have to buy two mascaras for the total effect that I want.  Costly too! That means paying nearly $50 bucks for mascara. Another thing that displeases me is that there is very little mascara inside each tube. By comparison- Bare Escentuals Big Tease mascara had so much product that it took me a month of wiping the wand off everyday before it was as empty as the Dior tubes.
The bottom line is that while I will enjoy this treat that I purchased for myself, I will not repurchase because it's just too expensive. I feel like I was a little swayed by the brand and that the reviews over hyped this product.
Is it wrong that I dream that an ultimate mascara exists? One that lengthens and volumizes at the same time? And that it's less than a small fortune?

Christmas Party Pics! & J Simpson Ken Paves Extensions Review (A much delayed post)

I had an amazing Christmas this year. I spent it with my boyfriends family, and later on with my family. The weekend prior to Christmas, we went to a nice Christmas party at a bar/restaurant, but I felt TERRIBLE. My throat was progressively closing up and it was so sore I couldn't speak or swallow for the rest of the night.. so I missed out on the dinner/dessert and drinks.

This is the gorgeous tree my boyfriends mom decorated

Me and George at the Christmas party

At the the end of the night back home.. (I was originally wearing green, so my nails matched but I had an outfit change.. lol)

And you all know I was wearing my extensions.. and curled my hair with a flat iron.

Jessica Simpson HAIRDO (Ken Paves) Hair Extensions
I had some requests asking me if I tried these. And yes, I tried the synthetic hair extensions, as well as the human hair extensions. I purchased them off ebay for a fraction of what they were being sold for at my local ULTA. I think they went to clearance because I don't see them anymore.

Here are my thoughts:
21" Human Hair Extensions in the shade R10 Chestnut
I had these in my hair everyday for a year.

Here are the
PROS:
- The extensions are layered, so it blends in VERY well with your real hair unlike other extensions that hang like strands
- They were thick and gave my hair lots of volume
- After dying them, the condition still stayed great
- Very minimal shedding through shampoos
- They stayed good through lots of heat styling and styling products
- It held a curl well, unlike many I've tried
- You can style it as you would you real hair. For example, I would wash my hair, apply hair gel and diffuse it with the extensions in my hair and it looked exactly like my real hair.

CONS:
- The piece was too large for my head, so it hung onto my neck a little (this may set me back from purchasing it again) Its suppose to be form fitting.. but it wasn't for me.
- It is heavy, so it puts strain on your roots

Here is a picture of me wearing them last year straight:

Here they are curly:

This is how short my hair was without them (picture taken the same week) gahh my hair was so fried!!

Now, the Synethetic 23" Wavy Extensions in R6 Dark Chocolate

PROS:

- Super long
- Very silky when you first buy them
- Layered to blend in with your hair
- Not overly shiny like a lot of synthetic hair, so you couldn't tell it was fake
- The piece fit my head well, unlike the human hair piece
- Light weight
- Curls stayed in place, even when washed

CONS:
- Can't heat style it or put products in it
- Lasts only for a couple weeks or less with daily wear
- Once you wash them the consistency turns coarser
- They don't last longer than 2 weeks. They turn to ratty barbie hair.

I would recommend these if you're going to wear them for a special occasion or event to look your best. Because they only look the best the first few times you wear them.

I don't have many picture of me wearing these. But here is one:

horrible pic.. ignore the pimples. lol

If you have any other questions about these just ask!
