Thoughts of a wandering mind ...

while driving home from work I was remembering some of the slang from my youth. Slang is a unique form of communication because it differs from region to region, ethnicity to ethnicity, but wherever it was that you grew up, your slang was the coolest. And, as I was remembering and laughing to myself, I began to deduce how some of these words came into being ... When I was in junior high it was

Leonardo DiCaprio to visit the Philippines this August 2010

I received this news and info from a reliable source and they sends more info about Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio's visit here in our country this August 2010. It was reported also here via their interview at Philstar.com that Leo's visit was supposed to be around 2011 but it turned out his visit went a little early and he will be here next month to do some environmental-awareness project in Albay, although that his movie with director Christopher Nolan in "Inception" is coming, he will be here not for the movie but for the project that he will spearhead personally, he will stay at the ultra-luxurious resort in Misibis Bay located on Cagraray Island in Bacacay, Albay Province, Bicol.

Misibis Bay (more pics below)

We will post more info and news about DiCaprio's visit here, and hopefully he visit us too in Manila, and it will be cool if we can meet him too. :)

3G wireless technology enables more responsive health care systems

The Philippine Department of Health, Tarlac Provincial Health Office and Qualcomm Incorporated, through its Wireless Reach initiative, announced the successful completion of the Wireless Access for Health project’s pilot phase.

The project participants leveraged their expertise and resources in public health, medical care, technology and training to create an electronic health record system that meets the needs of health care decision makers on varying levels, ranging from midwives to doctors to policy makers.
Results at the conclusion of the pilot phase, which recorded over 12,000 patient consultations, indicate that such a system is not only feasible and improves patient care in rural health clinics, but also has a real impact for decision makers.
Wireless Access for Health utilizes 3G wireless technology to enable a locally developed electronic health record system. In the Philippines, local health care providers compile and report public health data to the Field Health Service Information System (FHSIS), which is the major source of data used for policy analysis and planning.

The Wireless Access for Health project aims to streamline this reporting process by building on and strengthening the existing Community Health Information Tracking System (CHITS), an electronic medical record system developed by the University of the Philippines Manila. CHITS improves patient care and access to public health information by consolidating data captured during patient visits into reports for health care workers in four health units in the Tarlac region of the Philippines.

“The Wireless Access for Health project’s electronic health record system is the appropriate response to the DOH’s need for finding innovative ways of transmitting reliable health data to allow for speedier decision making and action,” said Dr. Esperanza Cabral, secretary of the Department of Health in the Philippines.

The pilot project’s results have been positive at the rural health units in Gerona, Moncada, Paniqui and Victoria.

A process that previously took hours to complete, CHITS now can instantly generate all 23 of the DOH’s FHSIS reports, allowing for improved patient care and more efficient patient visits, as the time needed to search for records is reduced to just seconds.

The ability to easily view, record and share patient information simultaneously across multiple computers within a health clinic allows clinicians to complete patient consultations earlier, resulting in increased capacity to provide further support to community health workers.

“Wireless Access for Health is truly beneficial for the entire public health system, from patients to doctors to health care authorities at the local, regional and national level,” stated Dr. Ricardo P. Ramos, chief of Tarlac provincial health unit.

“The system’s accurate and timely submission of health data is important in helping the government to identify and prevent disease outbreaks across the Philippines.”

Aquino statement to bolster LTO campaign vs 'wang-wangs'

Presidential Decree 96 was issued 37 years ago to limit the use of sirens — colloquially called "wang-wang" — on the roads. However, high-ranking politicians intimidate law enforcers who prevent the unauthorized use of the devices.

On Thursday, outgoing Land Transportation Office head Alberto Suansing said President Benigno Aquino III's statement's about the abuse of the devices may hopefully give teeth to the enforcement of the law.

"Mabuti naman at inanunsyo ang bagay na iyan. Ang mga enforcers natin, di na maa-andap (It's a good thing he announced that matter. Our law enforcers would no longer be intimidated)," Suansing said in an interview on GMA News' Unang Hirit.

He added the public could send a text message to 09189447951 to report violators.

PD 96, issued in 1973 by the late strongman Ferdinand Marcos, regulates the use of sirens, bells, whistles, horns and other similar devices.

"The gadgets or devices mentioned above may be attached to and use only on motor vehicles designated for official use by the Armed Forces of the Philippines, National Bureau of Investigation, Land Transportation Commission, Police Departments, Fire Departments, and hospital ambulances," a portion of the law said.

For government officials, only the following are entitled to use vehicles with these devices: President, Vice President, Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, and Supreme Court Chief Justice.

NYX Ultra Pearl Manias

First, another thanks to Mae- I only have these to talk about because of her!
Ultra Pearl Manias are another kind of loose shadows that NYX Makes.  These however, are more closely related to mica samples that you get from mineral makeup companies than proper loose shadows. The interesting thing about them is that the finishes vary from shade to shade on these Pearl Manias, some being downright metallic while others being shimmer with a more subtle sheen. You'll see what I mean.
Without some sort of primer/base adhesive, the color payoff is pretty crappy. But add in a bit of Fyrinnae's Pixie Epoxy, and take a look:
Much prettier, right? Like I said before, the finishes are a bit different. Mocha and Silver are definitely metallic, where as the others have various degrees of shimmer. Space and Purple both have a bit of a blue under sheen to them and Jade is quite frosty.
Now the neat thing about these Pearl Manias is that you're not just limited to using them as eyeshadow. I'll talk more about this later, but *ahem* use your imagination.
Ah! I almost forgot the best part, these go for $2.50 per vial. Talk about cheap!
Till tomorrow then!

Celtics coach Doc Rivers will return for 2010-11

BOSTON – Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers will return for another season, staying with the team he led to the NBA finals twice in three years for a run at another championship.

"Doc is a fantastic coach and leader and I am thrilled he is coming back for the upcoming season," Celtics co-owner Steve Pagliuca said Wednesday in an e-mail to The Associated Press.

Rivers' decision was first reported in the Boston Herald. Four hours later, the Celtics released a statement confirming Rivers would return.

"Doc is re-energized and enthusiastic about coming back to make another run at winning a championship with the Celtics," general manager Danny Ainge said in the two-sentence statement.

Rivers did not immediately return a message left at his hotel in San Antonio, where he was watching his son, Austin, play in an international under-18 tournament.

The inability to watch his four children play in sports was one of the major things pulling Rivers toward taking time off from coaching. He said at last week's NBA draft that he was hoping there would be some compromise that would allow him to give both his personal and professional lives proper attention.

Rivers lives in the Orlando area in the offseason, and his family remains there.

Rivers' decision does not mean that the nucleus of the Celtics team that won the franchise's unprecedented 17th NBA title in 2008 will be back for a run in 2010-11. Paul Pierce has reportedly said he will opt out of his contract and become a free agent, and Ray Allen is also due to become a free agent on Thursday.

Without them, the Celtics would need to make a big splash in free agency to contend.

Kevin Garnett is under contract for two more years and point guard Rajon Rondo signed an extension last fall that would keep him in Boston through the 2014-15 season. Kendrick Perkins, who could miss six months or more with torn knee ligaments, has one year left on his deal.

Rivers has a career coaching record of 451-380, with a 46-40 playoff mark. With the Celtics, he is 280-212 with a 41-30 postseason record.

He guided Boston to a 66-16 record and the Celtics' record 17th NBA title two years ago. This season, the Celtics returned to the NBA finals before losing in seven games to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Rivers said last week that it was a difficult decision between two families: While he has missed the opportunity to watch his four children — all athletes — compete, he has grown close to the Celtics' players. He called Ainge "one of my best friends."

"You look around the league, and you don't see that," Rivers said after the NBA draft, adding that both players and management have lobbied him to stay. "They've been doing their jobs, I'll put it that way. So have the players. They've been very vocal in their support. But that's good. We're very close."

Geena Davis vs negative media images of women

NEW YORK, United States—With her ground-breaking roles in such films as Thelma and Louise and A League of Their Own, Academy Award-winning actress Geena Davis is no stranger to playing strong women on the silver screen.

Off-camera, she is fighting passionately to ensure that women and girls are accurately depicted in the media, warning that they hyper-sexualization and other negative portrayals could roll back hard-won progress in achieving the United Nations-backed Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), eight anti-poverty targets with a 2015 deadline.

Acknowledging the hard work of the UN and other organizations aimed at promoting economic development and curbing violence against women, “we don’t want to see it undermined by a culture of hyper-sexualization or stereotyping of women in the media because it will… start to take away some of the progress if we’re not taking care of the image of women,” she told the UN News Center.

“As an actor, I had the good fortune of being in a few movies that resonated particularly with women, and it really was a lesson for me in the power of media images,” said Ms. Davis, who early this week addressed the opening of the annual high-level segment of the UN Economic and Social Council (Ecosoc), focusing this year on the empowerment of women and girls.

Some six years ago, while watching television programming and movies targeted at children with her then two-year-old daughter, she noticed a marked disparity in the portrayal of men and women.

“I find that to be disturbing because it means that we’re raising generation after generation of boys and girls to become used to the idea that girls hold a lesser position in our society, that they’re less important, their stories are less interesting,” she stressed.

For more than half a century, the ratio of female to male characters has held constant at 1:3, Ms. Davis said, resulting in many people not noticing or questioning the paucity of women in movies and TV shows.

Her research organization, See Jane, has carried out a large-scale analysis of movies and TV shows aimed at children under the age of 11, finding that between 1990 and 2005, there was no improvement in the ratio of female to male characters.

“So it’s not something that’s getting better or improving,” Ms. Davis said, in spite of isolated cases of popular female characters, such as Dora the Explorer. “The general trend is for things to stay where they are.”

Also the mother of two boys, she said that she calls attention to how women and girls are portrayed in programming, asking her children why they think certain characters are girls and not boys.

“It’s getting to the point now where occasionally I’ll lean over to say, ‘Hey did you notice?’” Ms. Davis said, recalling conversations with her now eight-year-old daughter while watching TV and movies.

“Yeah, there’s not enough girls,” her daughter responds. “She’s been very well educated,” Ms. Davis pointed out, laughing.

'Old school' Montreal gangster gunned down

MONTREAL—A reputed Montreal gangster with ties to the Rizzuto crime family was gunned down in a brazen daylight shooting, police said Wednesday.

Agostino Cuntrera, 66, and his 48-year-old bodyguard were shot Tuesday afternoon outside an east-end Montreal restaurant said to be owned by Cuntrera.

Two men in a black Chevrolet Impala similar to one spotted leaving the scene were arrested shortly after the slayings. One of them was released while the other is still being held on unrelated charges, police told AFP.

Cuntrera was believed to have taken over the helm of the Rizzuto clan after the 2006 extradition to the United States of crime boss Vito Rizzuto on murder charges, according to public broadcaster CBC.

Cuntrera was described by local media as being "old school," low-key and shy of the limelight. He is the third high-profile Mafioso to be murdered since Rizzuto's arrest in 2004.

Vito Rizzuto is currently serving a 10-year sentence in Colorado for racketeering, related to three underworld murders in Brooklyn in 1981.

In December, Rizzuto's son Nick Rizzuto Jr. was gunned down in broad daylight in Montreal's Notre-Dame-de-Grace district.

An elderly man associated with the powerful Rizzuto mafia was also reported missing in May.

Paolo Renda, 70, had been recently released from prison after a serving a sentence for criminal association among other charges, but did not arrive home one night, police sources said.

His wife -- sister of Vito Rizzuto -- found his car near their home and alerted police, who found the car doors open and keys on the dashboard.

Montreal's Sicilian Mafia is facing new competition for criminal spoils from a Calabrese clan, street gangs, and even Haitian groups, according to crime experts.

Each wants a piece of Rizzuto territory, possibly with the backing of the New York Mafia which cut ties to the Rizzuto family after a falling out over the Brooklyn murders.

Born in Sicily in 1944, Cuntrera moved to Canada in 1965 and helped establish the Rizzuto clan's criminal reign in Montreal. He served five years in prison for conspiracy in the 1978 murder of then crime boss Paolo Violli, who headed a rival Calabrese clan.

Upon his release, Cuntrera started several small businesses in Montreal, including restaurants.

June Favorites

The temperatures have finally gone up and quite high, which means I spent the whole month using products that wouldn't slide off my face despite the heat.

  • Estee Lauder DayWear tinted moisturizer and Diorskin Nude mineral powder foundation: this is a fantastic combination for a matte but natural and light skin, I can't say it enough!
  • The BodyShop Vitamin E face mist: I spritz this on my face to set my makeup in the morning, and it doesn't move. I know this is really working because on days where I forget it, my blush tends to disappear through the day. This product is a fantastic sealing spray!
  • Mac Marine Life: yes, this has been exaggeratedly hyped, sold out quickly, and the pretty gold on top is just an overspray that disappears after the first brush swipe. But... I swapped for a brand new one and I am so happy I did, this color is absolutely gorgeous. Pink blushes usually don't suit me as good as peach ones, but this pink coral is an exception and I've been wearing it every day since I got it!
  • Coral Crepe paintpot and Shiseido hydropowder cream shadow #H1 (champagne): my favourite eye combo of the moment! I just slap some UDPP on the lid, the Coral Crepe on the outer corner and the Shiseido all over the rest of the lid. I blend a tiny bit of matte brown in the crease, and that's it! Luminous, pretty, great on blue eyes, and so easy to do!
  • Guerlain KissKiss Baby 241 Rosewood Nude: this is my favorite "my lip but better" color and of course, Guerlain has just discontinued it and I wasn't able to find a backup. This is exactly the color of my lips, just a tad bit darker, and I love the moisturizing texture and the fruity smell. Great summer lipstick, as it's so easy to wear.

  • GHD Sea Spray for matte waves: my hair is naturally wavy/curly but I wear it straight most of the time, and always blowdry it. But with this weather, I must say I can't find the courage to use heat tools! So I just let my hair airdry, which often results in a wavy mess, and then to style it I just spray some of this spray. It does give more definition to the curls without making the hair crunchy (which I hate). I also love the smell which really makes me thing of the sea and the salt. Then I gather the hair in a messy kind of ponytail, and I'm done. It's Summery, kind of sexy, and so easy to do!

New Hairstyle trendy mode

I love these stories about celebrities actually taking a role in the world and this one is a great one. Kate Hudson and her star stylist David Babii finally launched the David Babii for WildAid line of hair care products.

Kate did not just become the face behind the line but also took a part at being the guinea pig to the product line which includes natural ingredients like volcanic ash, cupucacu butter, blue algae, wild orchids, and kiwis.

Besides the natural ingredients, the hair care products are also free of sulfates, parabens, and petrochemicals which are bad for the environment. The products do not contain any ingredients derived from animals, are not tested on animals, and a percentage of the profits will be donated to WildAid. Even the packaging will be made from at least 10-percent recycled plastic. All sounds great to mean. Now let’s look at some of the products.

There are a few products now but hopefully the line will grow. The Hydrating Shampoo shown below is made of cupuacu butter, wild orchid, and blue algae which are all natural ingredients designed for moisturizing, shining, and strengthen the hair. The Hair Polish is made of extracts from ten natural ingredients and is designed to add shine and strengthen the hair. The Volcanic Ash Root Amplifier is made of natural ingredients including volcanic ash which is really interesting. I didn’t know volcanic ash had hair enhancing properties. All these products sound great and I definitely will purchase a shampoo and conditioner to try out.

Lacey Brown Hairstyle

Wow I can’t believe how much talk there is about Sarah Palin’s hairstyle and people wanting the same look. I am kind of old school and my Sarah Palin hairstyle belongs to the lovely and talented Lisa Loeb (No Nine Stories) and as she had the look waaaayyyyyyy before. She has the signature glasses and the brunette locks with an upgrade in the highlights. What I also love and recommend is the swept fringe parted way off center and the light curls along the ends of her hair. Enjoy =)It has come to my attention that a lot of women out there do not know how to color their own hair at home properly after reading this article on this lady Charlotte Feeney who sued L’Oreal Inc after her accidently colored her natural blonde hair to dark brown. Supposedly she claimed that the tube was filled with the wrong shade and it was not her error. Come one people, almost all DIY hair coloring kits from the major brands like L’Oreal and Garnier all come with instructions that need to be followed exactly and usually the first two steps are an allergy test and a strand test.

These two tests will make sure you are will not have an allergic reaction to the solution and allow you to see how the color will most likely look on your hair. It is surprising how many women I have asked say they skip these steps. Women should definitely go through with these steps. With so many different colors to choose from, a strand test can really help you decided if that is really the color you want because depending on natural hair color, it might not come out just like the sample on the box.

If anyone needs advice on choosing at home hair color for certain hair types and for matching facial skin tone, check out the articles on home hair coloring which provides helpful tips. Please just follow the instructions and do not go off suing a company without “no facts, no opinions and no standards to substantiate either of the allegations,” tdhat is according to the judge’s verdict on the ca

Katie Holmes Short Crop Hairstyle

All the buzz lately is Katie Holmes new short crop which does look fantastic on her but is not a very short crop. The length is long enough to create lots of playful looks by changing the texture yet short enough to really bring out her feminine facial features. I have to say she has transformed her hair into two great hits, first with the bob and now with this shorter cut. Wonder if Suri will get the same hairdo.Okay, Okay it has been quite a while since my last post but I have great excuse. Cindy, our head gal gave me an assignment which was to watch Shear Genius, a show on Bravo Network, where hairstylists go head to head in these challenges. I actually watched the first season first and loved it and the second season is even better. The first season had some great challenges but I love how the show is even more challenging now, like the blindfold cut and musical chairs. I think this is such an underrated show because of the lack of advertisement so here is my free advertisement for a great show.

New Haircut!

I have been talking on Twitter and my videos recently about my upcoming haircut. I was going for quite a drastic change and I had responses that varied from "ooh, can't wait" to "omg! No!". I've had enough of long hair for now.

Here's the mess I left the house with this morning. It needed something doing to it at least.

And here's what I have now!

I'm loving it! I don't think the nape of my neck has been bare in around 10 years.

Ojon Leave-in Glossing Cream

We're big fans of Ojon's natural hair care products, especially their dry shampoo.  Our latest discovery is the Ojon Leave-in Glossing Cream which can be used on damp hair as a styling cream to add shine and control, or on dry hair as a finishing cream to add texture.  We loved the scent (somewhere between nutty and vanilla); the way it control our static and flyaways; and the smoothness and shine on our ends.

You can find Ojon's Glossing Cream at Sephora, Ulta, QVC and www.ojon.com/. $30 for 4.25 oz.

Kim Vo's Hair Travel Tips

The other week, we had the chance to interview celeb colorist Kim Vo about his styling secret for girls on the go:

Review: Urban Decay Loose Shadow "Shattered"

I've pretty much loved everything I've bought from Urban Decay. They were, after all the very first "high end" make up brand I bought from. I would say "high end" was something I couldn't get at Boots, but we can get Urban Decay from Boots these days. At the time I thought spending £5 on one item was a lot! I bought my first Urban Decay from Pure Beauty in London. That really was a great shop, I wish they were still open. So we're going back about 10 years!

However, the loose shadows just don't work. I only bought one and I was very disappointed.

This is in "Shattered" which is a tealy-blue with shimmer.

The packaging looks pretty. I love the detail that Urban Decay put into their packaging, but this just doesn't work! The loose shadow is held at the bottom of the tube and the lid holds a brush that you use to pick up the loose shadow and apply. To get the shadow out without the brush, you have to tip it into something else, which is going to waste a lot of product. I couldn't fit any of my eye shadow brushes into the pot either.

That wouldn't be so bad if the brush was actually useful.

The brush feels like it has natural bristles, it's very short and stiff. This means that it flings eye shadow everywhere when you try and use it. Also, the whole brush seems to get covered in the loose shadow so that gets dropped everywhere. If you look closely in the photo, there's drops of loose shadow in the background. I'd tried my best to tap off the brush, but I still got chunks falling off.

Another issue I had was that most of the colours were available in pressed form anyway. I think that was the biggest reason why I didn't bother buying any more. I think they were a little more than the pressed versions and I think you got a little less in there as well. I'm not completely sure as it was on the box, which I no longer have.

This is the pressed version of "Shattered", which I've had for a little while. It's the same colour as the loose shadow.

When I bought the loose version, I was shown that the best way to use it was to use it wet. The SA tipped some out and added a drop of liquid, mixing it to create a paste. It certainly does look a lot more metallic when you apply it that way, but you are going to waste a heck of a lot of eye shadow that way. I don't think I ever bothered to use it wet and anyway, the magic of Pixie Epoxy will do that even with the pressed version.

I usually used this with Urban Decay's Primer Potion and it lasted just fine on me. I didn't get any creasing or fading, which is usual for Urban Decay's shadows for me.

And, finally, here's some swatches.

If you can find this at a discount price then you might as well go ahead and get it. It's not worth it for the full price. I've not included pricing information as I'm not entirely sure this is a current product in the UK.
