August Favorites

Another month goes away, and with August, Summer is moving on. Here are the things I have used and loved during this past month.

Helena Rubinstein Lash Queen mascara.
Honestly, I didn't like this mascara when I first tried it. I got it because of its traditional big fat brush but it didn't really give me the volume I expected. I was hoping it would give me the same results as my YSL Singulier when I found out I was allergic to it.
I must say, though, that I've been using it anyway (didn't want to waste it) and that I like it a bit better now that it's a bit 'ripened'. It doesn't do any miracle but it lengthens nicely and it's very black. I won't be repurchasing it (now that I'm sure YSL Faux-Cils isn't irritating my eyes like its little cousin, I'll be sticking to that) but it's doing its job.

Mac CB96 lipstick.
I never expected to like this one, I must say I was probably turned off by the weird name. But when I swatched it, I fell in love: it's a gorgeous peachy orange with a pink duochrome, infused with gold. And it's a Frost, which is one of the finishes I like a lot for Mac lipsticks. It looks a bit scary in the picture but I find it very easy to wear and if you blot it a bit, it's definitely wearable even if you're shy!

Cream eyeshadows.
I have worn tons of cream shadows in August, as they're so easy to wear and apply, and long lasting if you chose the right ones.
The products I have been using:
MUFE Aquacreams

These were created for the French Nautical Ballet, so describing them as waterproof is an understatement! They come in a wide variety of colors that can be used on eye, lips and face. Obviously, for non-nautical use, some colors are more appropriate for certain areas than for others.
I own 6 of them that I received as a birthday gift, and I'll be posting pictures and swatches at some point.

Bobbi Brown Long Wear Cream Eyeshadows.
I like these a lot, the ones I own are all metallic and some have some serious sparkles going on, but they look absolutely gorgeous. The texture is really creamy and easy to use.

What about you? What were your favorites for August?

Review: Avene Diacneal Skincare Lotion (For Blemishes)

stock image from aveneusa.com
Is there such thing as a miracle product for acne?
Yes, I'd say so- I've finally found mine. Acne has been troubling me for the majority of my life, ever since I was nine years old. There's been times when I had the whole pizza-face thing going on (that's how bad scarring and cystic acne was for me in my early teens) and times when I only had a handful of zits, but they were always there.
I've tried practically every line of acne care products found in American drugstores- over the counter benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid products just haven't really proved effective for me.
Behold, Avene Diacneal.
What it is: a treatment lotion containing 6% Glycolic Acid and 0.1% Retinal for acne or wrinkles. It comes out of the tube as a pearly yellow cream that smells like... I'm not sure. But it's definitely scented.
First, I have to say that my skin is quite sensitive. When I try a new product, there's a good chance that it'll make my skin worse, not better. Heck, my skin is so sensitive that if I even LOOK at a product funny, I'll break out or it'll burn, etc.
Not only did this treatment get along with my skin, I've seen amazing results. My skin is overall clearer, more even and much, much smoother. Really.

I'm not completely blemish free (due to diet and hormone fluctuations, I doubt I'll ever be) but I'm no longer super self conscious about a few minor zits. It's no longer a matter of being embarrassed to go out without concealer because my acne is such a prominent feature of my face and the first thing people see when they look at me. Even when I do get acne, it clears up much faster now. I've also noticed that past acne scarring has been reduced, and that the texture of my face has changed for the better (this also works as a wrinkle reducer!).
Now, I started using Diacneal about two months ago, at first every three days, at night- increasing to every other night in the last few weeks. The reason I use it at night is because that when I put it on, it does seem to make my skin a little slick feeling. Not saying that it makes my skin oily overall, but if I put it on at night, I can wash  away the treatment in the morning.

Ingredients: Water, Cetyl Alcohol, Cyclomethicone, Polysorbate 60, Glycolic Acid 6%, Alcohol, Sodium Hydroxide, BHT, Dimethiconol, Fragrance, Polymethyl Methacrylate, Potassium Sorbate, Red 33 (Cl 17200). Retinal 0.1%.

Also be aware that products such as this one will increase skin sensitivity to the sun's rays. Anyways, Avene Diacneal isn't super cheap for an acne treatment, $52 for 1 oz. on SkincareRx.com. But let me tell you, I have never found a product that has made more of impact on my skin, so it's worthy every penny. One tube has lasted me 2 months so far, and I estimate that it'll go for another month at least, even though I spread a thin layer all over my face for every application.

So, lengthy review. What do you think? Have you ever tried this, or any of Avene's other products?

Product was purchased by me, for my own use.

Chantecaille Tiger in the Wild Palette, Anais Lip Chic & Classic Lip Gloss

Patience is not a virtue I possess. I wanted to wait for Beauty Week at Neimans, but in short, failed. As soon as I saw the new Chantecaille Tiger in the Wild Palette $78, I had to bring it home with me. The minimums of the GWPs are usually high and in past years have been rather disappointing. I didn't think it was worth waiting for, so immediately straight to the cash register I went. The is different than I expected, much prettier in person, unique for fall in my opinion, but still suitable for year round as it is very classic. The Tiger Palette has an overspray making the colors look harsh and almost sharp. Underneath is a lovely glowy palette of ivory, silvery grey with the slightest hint of sage, a lovely smokey navy-plum, and a soft apricot blush. It's really lovely. I also picked up Anais Lip Chic $30 (very sheer peach) and Classic Lip Gloss $28 (neutral peachy-brownish, but very pigmented).

Swiped on the left side of each circle

Natural light, swiped on left side of each circle

Swatches

Anais + Classic

Anais Lip Chic (it's very sheer, I wish I had gone with Capucine for more color)

Applying Classic Lip Gloss on top of Anais Lip Chic (so you can see the color)

Both Anais + Classic

Overall thoughts: Pricey but beautiful. I really love this palette. It has that typical Chantecaille glowy quality for a subtle but not-too-subtle look. I think the blush is dupe-able in other brands. The eyeshadows have this beautiful shimmer that I find extremely unique. The photos do not do it justice. I think the palest shade is similar to Laura Mercier Stellar Eyeshadow. I could not find an exact dupe for the silver or navy-plum shade - but I'm sure there are similar colors in other lines.

Of course, check out Karla Sugar for swatches of the whole fall collection. Note we do have different skintones and swatch differently. I usually swatch with a brush which is why mine are usually sheerer.

Orly Cosmic FX- Space Cadet is MINE!

3x Space Cadet, outdoors, direct sun, no flash
When I first saw the promo pictures for this polish, I died a little inside, of pure happiness. It looked so incredibly cool- a foily duochromey polish and now that I finally have it in person, I'm ecstatic.
I do have one problem though- I've never ever encountered anything quite like this, I don't know if I have the vocabulary to describe it.
What does it look like to me? A greenish jelly base with metallic magenta/olive foil-like shimmer. At different angles and different distances from the light, it looks more green-yellow or more blue green. How is this possible?
According to Orly:
"The new Cosmic FX collection from ORLY features six new shades made with exclusive Mineral FX raw material technology, which delivers multi-dimensional lacquers that reflect light in a sparkling spectrum of intense color."
Awesome. That doesn't really explain matters any further for me, but oh well- I love this collection.
So here is a crap load of different polishes in different lighting/coats.

Indoors, 3x, flash

Outside, indirect flash, 3coats, flash

Outdoors, 2x, no flash, direct sunlight

Polishes from this Cosmic collection are more than the regular retail price, $10.
So, what do you think of this bizarrely complex lacquer?

Product was purchased by me, for my own use.
